DeSantis joins Democrat in nationwide push for term limits in Congress

On Tuesday, the governor announced he and former Rep. David Trone of Maryland would co-chair U.S. Term Limits, a non-profit dedicated to gathering the necessary support to call a constitutional convention to propose term limits. They need the support of 34 states to do so.

DeSantis and Trone published a joint op-ed in The New York Times, which framed the push for term limits in the context of the federal government shutdown. They argued that too many members of Congress are focused more on reelection than on passing legislation and working for the public.

“Our Founders wouldn’t recognize the 119th Congress if they saw it today. Congress is now less a representative body and more like an elite country club of career politicians who are consumed by an obsession to remain in power – a far cry from its original purpose,” DeSantis and Trone said in a joint statement.

Nineteen states across the country have passed resolutions calling for a convention on the matter, including Florida. Part of U.S. Term Limits advocacy involves calling on candidates to sign onto a pledge supporting a three-term limit for House members and a two-term limit for Senators. That would effectively be a six-year and 12-year limit, respectively.
